NUJ members in the east of England have tabled their own proposals for restructuring in a bid to challenge cutbacks by Johnston Press, the NUJ website is reporting.
The relatively modest demands include a plan to keep production of titles and the journalists who work on them closer to their readers.
NUJ Left wants to take the debate further and has called a London public meeting for Tuesday 17 February to kickstart a discussion about media ownership and state aid. We’re encouraging NUJ Left members across the country to organise their own public meetings and debates.
Over at the Guardian, Greenslade asks ‘How should we fund newspapers?‘, pointing out that “there is clearly a need for a public debate about how to save local newspapers if we believe their continued existence is in the public interest”. So let’s tell him.
