Stand up for journalism

Our Stand up for journalism comedy benefit raised £696.51 for our members leading the fightback against the cuts.
The gig was held at Bar B Lo in Marchmont Street, London, the owners of which generously donated 10% of the night’s bar takings to the fighting fund.
Huge thanks go to everyone who helped organise the event, everyone who came, the venue and our performers - Andrew O’Neill, Attila the Stockbroker, Julia Brosnan, David Mulholland and Kate Smurthwaite – who waived their performance fee for the cause.
Thanks also to our compere, NUJ press and PR branch member James Davies, and DJ Barter who kept the militant vibe going throughout the night with a thumping selection of ska, new wave and punk tunes.
The money will be split equally between the Yorkshire Post/Yorkshire Evening Post, York Press, and Daily Record and Sunday Mail chapels, all of whom are taking industrial action against compulsory redundancies.
We need to use all our means – industrial, political and social – to help these chapels continue the fight.
Nights like this raise vital funds, give striking members confidence that they are not alone, and allow us to put the issues in front of a new audience.
NUJ Left members outside London are urged to hold similar events.
