NUJ delivers pay rises

Staff at the Telegraph returned after Christmas with an extra present – a pay rise and bonus won by the NUJ. Staff received a £500 bonus and a 1.5 per cent pay rise. Full story here

Meanwhile at the BBC, the NUJ branch has secured pay rises for six members of staff who had been historically underpaid for the jobs. The victory may lead to more cases of staff who are acting up or underpaid for their job winning pay rises. More here

Note to Boris on worthy causes

Apparently London mayor Boris Johnson thinks getting £250,000 a year for being a part-time journalist isn’t an obscenely massive salary and he defends it by saying he makes a “substantial donation” to charity.

If he’s looking for worthy causes to assuage his conscience, as a fellow journalist he could do worse than sling a few of his hard-earned quids this way. Or this way if members go out on strike. Or, similarly, this way etc.

Stand up for journalism hits the north

Following the success of our event in London in April, a Stand up for journalism gig is to be held next month in the north west.

Stockport has been chosen as the venue because MEN Media has removed all the journalists from the local office where the Stockport Express, South Manchester Reporter and Trafford Metro News staff were based.

The media fightback in Scotland

A one-day strike at the Glasgow-based Daily Record and Sunday Mail titles has brought the NUJ’s campaign of resistance to the jobs carnage across the UK and Ireland to Scotland in the most forceful and determined way so far.

Following weeks of unproductive talks – and management’s refusal to consider dozens of volunteers for redundancy as an alternative to forcing through at least 20 compulsories – the NUJ chapel voted by 85% to strike.

Scots get STUC in
5 April 2009

As NUJ members at the Trinity Mirror titles the Scottish Daily Record and Sunday Mail took strike action yesterday over job cuts, the Scottish TUC called for a boycott. Brendan Barber take note.

She died how she lived for the last seven years – in the full glare of the media spotlight, or to use its cosy pseudonym, ‘the public eye’.

Cosy because this suggests the lustful operations of the mass circulation media in illuminating the private lives of public figures are always on behalf of the public.
